WATCH OF THE YEAR 2013

Welcome to the 4th edition of CH24.PL “Watch of the Year”. We are pleased to present you 31 nominated timepieces – the best of the best novelties of past 12 months.

It is already for the 4th time that CH24.PL honours the most interesting watch debuts of the past year. Each year watch industry gives birth to vast number of so called “novelties”, but among them there are true gems worth special highlights and awards – and this where “Watch of the Year” steps in. This year’s annual edition presents 7 categories (including “Public Prize” and “Special Jury Award”) and 31 nominated timepieces. Pre-selection was made by the international jury, composed of CH24.PL (Tomasz Kiełtyka and Łukasz Doskocz) along with Dariusz Chlastawa (president of the Polish Watch and Clocks Collectors Club) and three of the best watch journalist around: Elizabeth Doerr (WorldTempus, Forbes), Kristian Haagen (Timegeeks, 00/24 WatchWorld) and Miguel Saebra (Espiral do Tempo, Wordltempus).

Classic watch is pure form and elegance to be found in each of nominated watches, from the beautiful, gold Baume & Mercier, Frederique Constant with moon phases, ultra-thin Jaeger-LeCoultre in platinum, new incarnation of the iconic piece from Patek Philippe – the Calatrava and finally small but great Rolex Day-Date with rhodium dial.

Classic watch

Sports watches are a complete opposite of the classic, even though this year’s nominations represent somewhat more restrained approach. 5 selected pieces represent vide variety from traditional inspirations like the blue Tudor Heritage Chrono and Bell&Ross Sport Heritage Chrono through to the innovative materials like ceramics in Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver Ceramic, Omega Speedmaster “Dark Side of the Moon” and cermet in Jaeger-LeCoultre Deep Sea Chronograph.

Sports watch

Complications are often called the quintessence of mechanical watchmaking – and although they stay beyond the reach of average watch lover, they fascinate with mechanical complexity and precision. This year’s marvels are the Grand Complication from Lange&Söhne (the most complicated watch by the brand ever made), the perpetual calendar by Francois-Paul Journe, incredible spherical Gyrotourbillion 3 with chronograph by Jaeger-LeCoultre, a bit eccentric Charming Bird by Jaquet Droz and 8 Days beauty by Patek Philippe – the Gondolo.

Complicated watches

There is at least equal amount of fascination (for some even much bigger amount) with watchmaking innovations. 6 nominated projects represent 6 intriguing solutions to revive traditional approach to the subject of mechanical watch. Antoine Martin is the complete opposite of the world-wide chase for higher frequencies – the slowest beating mechanical watch on the market with extremely large balance wheel. Girard-Perregaux Constant Escapement present the solution to keep the constant energy rate for the balance with the use of elastic beam. Masterpiece Mp-05 LaFerrari is the architecture of the engine block from a Ferrari car transformed into the watch movement… with 50 days (!) of power reserve. Completely different inspirations influenced Maximilian Busser’s (MB&F) Legacy Machine No.2 and chain-driven Logical One by Romain Gauthier. And finally the EMC from Urwerk – the combination of mechanical watch and electronic control device.

Innovation in watchmaking

Ladies watches are becoming more and more important in the industry, with large number of collections created exclusively for the women and also 5 nominated timepieces – all mechanical and from the very best of Swiss watchmakers. Rotonde Mystery with diamonds in the transparent-dial marvel from Cartier. Randez-Vous Celestial is and astronomical chart in a watch by Jaeger-LeCoultre, as is a tourbillion for the ladies in Tambour Monogram Tourbillon from the aspiring watch house Louis Vuitton. Green Rolex Day-Date will delight every woman with the taste for simplicity. The one with more poetic spirit will rather go for the Lady Arpels Ballerine Enchantee from Van Cleef & Arpels.

Ladies Watch

And finally timepieces priced up to 10.000PLN – ones that will not require you to rob the bank. Alpina Sailing Yachttitmer Countdown presents Alpinas own in-house made regatta countdown module. Longines Heritage Avigation is a vintage character with modern look, just like the Tissot Luxury Automatic with the automatic Powermatic 80 calibre with 80 hours of power reserve. Aquis Depth Gague presents cleverly developed depth measurement module in a watch with surprisingly attractive price tag. And the SevenFriday P3 – the least expensive timepiece in the whole competition that proves, how original and innovative design can guarantee success.

Watch priced up to 10000zł
